- In our February e-newsletter, we spotlighted Boy of the Border, a previously unpublished children's book by Langston Hughes and Arna Bontemps. The book was published in December by Sweet Earth Flying Press, which was established by Dr. Maceo C. Dailey, Jr., and his wife, Sondra. Read the spotlight here.
- On February 1, 2010, Venus F. Strawn joined Humanities Texas Executive Director Michael L. Gillette and U.S. Representative Michael McCaul to present Jim Furgeson with an Outstanding Teaching Award. Furgeson teaches history, constitutional law, and practical law at Austin's McCallum High School.
November 2009
- On November 23, 2009, Michael L. Klein joined Humanities Texas Executive Director Michael L. Gillette and Congressman Lloyd Doggett to present Kyle Olson with an Outstanding Teaching Award. Olson teaches social studies and English as a second language at Austin's International High School. Among other remarkable accomplishments, Mr. Olson established the state's first AP art history class for English language learners.
- Dr. Juliet V. García, president of The University of Texas at Brownsville, was named one of Time magazine's ten best college presidents on November 11, 2009. Read the magazine's profile of Dr. García here.

- Venus F. Strawn, an Austin civic leader, has been appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to the Humanities Texas Board of Directors. Read a press release from the Governor's office here.

- The Alice and Bill Wright Photography Gallery at Abilene's Grace Museum opened on September 26, 2009. The gallery's inaugural exhibition features important works by Texas photographers both contemporary and historic. To read a spotlight from our e-newsletter about the gallery, click here.

August 2009
- Small Town Texas, an exhibition of photographs by Dr. Ricardo Romo, opened on August 22, 2009, at San Antonio's Witte Museum. We ran a spotlight on the exhibition in our September 2009 e-newsletter.
May 2009
- On May 13, 2009, former board member Light Cummins was appointed Texas State Historian by Gov. Rick Perry
- On Thursday, May 28, 2009 Ellen Temple was named Ralph W. Steen Memorial East Texan of the Year during the annual Deep East Texas Council of Governments meeting in Lufkin. The award recognizes Temple’s longtime dedication to philanthropy and community work in the Angelina County area.
- On Saturday, May 23, 2009, Betty Sue Flowers gave the commencement speech at The University of Texas at Austin’s Plan II graduation ceremony, marking a significant moment not only for the 150 seniors but also for herself. After forty-five years in Austin, Flowers left her post as director of the Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum, and began a new chapter of her life in New York City. April 2009
- On April 16, The College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin honored Leslie Blanton with the Pro Bene Meritis Award at a special dinner. Recipients have shown outstanding dedication to the liberal arts.
- In mid-April, Albert S. Broussard received the Cornerstone Faculty Fellowship in Liberal Arts from his home institution, Texas A&M University. Recipients are recognized for their scholarly achievements, outstanding classroom teaching, contributions to undergraduate and graduate programs, and service to the university.
January 2009
- The Humanities Texas Board of Directors elected two new members for terms beginning January 2009.
November 2008
- Dr. Juliet V. García was selected to join President-elect Obama's transition team.
October 2008
- On October 17, 2008, Dr. Ricardo Romo received the Distinguished Alumni Award from The University of Texas at Austin.
2007
- The Humanities Texas Board of Directors elected four new members for terms beginning January 2008.
- El Paso native Margo received the Order of the Aztec Eagle, Mexico’s highest award for non-citizens. Arturo Sarukhan, Mexico’s ambassador to the United States, presented the award during a ceremony at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C. - Bill Livingston, who retired in August after 58 years of service at The University of Texas at Austin, was featured in a front-page story in the Austin American-Statesman on November 19 and a feature article in UT's Alcalde magazine.
- Dr. Juliet García, president of the University of Texas at Brownsville, was named one of six distinguished alumni of The University of Texas at Austin for 2007. A native of Brownsville, she earned a doctoral degree from UT’s College of Communication and was the first Hispanic woman to lead a college or university in the United States.
