Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, seeks a historic preservation team to develop a Historic Structure Report and master plan for the Byrne-Reed House located at 1410 Rio Grande Street. The Byrne-Reed House is a three-story structure built in 1906 and renovated between 1948 and 1971.

Developing the Historic Structure Report and master plan is the first phase of a $2 million restoration that has received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Texas Historical Commission, and many individuals and private foundations. The restoration will comply with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and all other applicable governmental regulations. Humanities Texas also intends to pursue ratings through the Austin Green Building Program and the LEED Green Building Rating System.

All applicant firms/individuals must have significant experience in historic preservation and requisite understanding of all applicable governmental regulations and standards. Preference will be given to firms/individuals with experience incorporating sustainable materials and methods into the design, construction, and management of historic preservation projects.

The Byrne-Reed House restoration will serve an ongoing educational purpose, promoting interest in historic preservation and in architectural and cultural history. The successful team should be prepared to interact with the public.

Interested teams should submit:

• Description of firm (including number of years in business; names of full-time employees and their professional accreditations; and one-page résumés of key staff)

• Description of relevant projects (including project name, location, and size)

• References

Humanities Texas intends to select one or more qualified teams for interviews and further consideration; at that point, finalist teams will be asked to prepare specific proposals.

Available information includes existing conditions drawings and several interior and exterior historic photographs.

Humanities Texas intends to engage a team by mid-February, with work to begin immediately. For full consideration, materials should be received by February 1, 2008.

Humanities Texas encourages minority- and woman-owned teams to apply.
