On August 1, 2017, The University of Texas at San Antonio will sponsor "The History of Texas German," a public panel discussion at the Hotel Contessa in San Antonio on the history of the German language in Texas.

The discussion is part of the 23rd International Conference on Historical Linguistics (IHCL), a biennial program last hosted in Naples, Italy, in 2015. "The History of Texas German" will explore the important contributions to the linguistic and cultural landscape of Texas made by nineteenth-century German settlers and their descendants. The panel features several prominent scholars of linguistics, including Marc Pierce (The University of Texas at Austin), Christopher Wickham (The University of Texas at San Antonio), and Alfred Wildfeuer (University of Augsburg). The audience will be encouraged to participate in the Q&A portions of the presentations and in a final group discussion.

This program is made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas and is free and open to the public. The panel discussion will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Hotel Contessa Ballroom. For more information, visit the ICHL 23 website.
