NEH Senior Deputy Chairman Attends Humanities Texas Workshop in San Antonio

On Friday, February 2, Humanities Texas is hosting a professional development workshop on Critical Reading and Engaged Writing for Texas English and language arts teachers in San Antonio. The Senior Deputy Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Jon Parrish Peede, will be in attendance.

The workshop, which will take place at the Education Service Center Region 20, features scholars from The University of Texas at Austin as well as esteemed educational consultant Cathy D'Agostino.

Humanities Texas is the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. For more than a decade, the organization has partnered with the state’s leading universities and cultural organizations to hold institutes and workshops supporting teachers’ intellectual and professional development. These programs enhance student learning by providing teachers the opportunity to work closely with humanities scholars and explore topics at the heart of the state’s social studies and language arts curricula.

“Why do we place such emphasis on helping teachers excel?” posed Humanities Texas Executive Director Michael L. Gillette. “Because research confirms that the quality of teaching is the most significant factor in ensuring student success.”

“I came away from my Humanities Texas meetings with admiration for their innovative online and in-person educational programming,” said the Senior Deputy Chairman during the National Humanities Conference last November.

Teachers who participate in Humanities Texas professional development workshops and institutes attend for free and receive a stipend to secure a substitute as well as cover any travel costs associated with attending.

Humanities Texas accepts applications for its workshops on a rolling basis. Additional information about Humanities Texas and its professional development opportunities is available at www.humanitiestexas.org.
