Sabrina Barton received her Ph.D. from Cornell University. She is a former professor of film and gender studies at The University of Texas at Austin; her current work focuses on media literacy in the classroom. She leads workshops on film analysis and appreciation, most recently for teachers training with the Freedom Writers Foundation, and has published articles on a variety of topics, including several on Alfred Hitchcock.

Teaching Film and Visual Literacy
Since 1998, language arts teachers in Texas have been directed to teach visual and media literacy to their students. Few teachers, however, have been given any help in meeting this mandate. Through an engaging combination of lecture, discussion, and group activities (using a variety of film clips), this presentation provides participants with strategies, concepts, and accessible terminology for teaching students how to read the visual language of film, and can be adjusted to emphasize issues of race, gender, and diversity. Dr. Barton is also available to introduce a range of audiences, including book groups, community groups, and other organizations, to the pleasures of in-depth analysis and appreciation of visual “texts.”
