The number of imports and exports at the Port of Galveston increased exponentially during the late nineteenth century and blossomed after Galveston gained a Deep Water harbor, giving rise to some of Texas’s strongest labor unions. Clifford Farrington’s book, Biracial Unions on Galveston’s Waterfront, 1865–1925, examines the often-overlooked community of workers along Galveston’s docks, specifically discussing the racial tensions among the longshoremen unions. Readers can join GHF at the 1838 Menard House for a lively discussion of the book.
