In the early 1970s, Bill Wittliff photographed vaqueros in northern Mexico as they went about their daily chores that had changed little since the first Mexican cow herders learned to work cattle from a horse's back. Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy, the exhibition based on Wittliff's work, was created by the Wittliff Collection at the Alkek Library, Texas State University-San Marcos and presented in partnership with the Humanities Texas traveling exhibitions program.
