Education
In February 2020, Humanities Texas held two one-day teacher workshops in Austin and San Antonio on teaching critical reading and writing skills, focusing on works from the Texas literary tradition.
Faculty presentations examined works of fiction and poetry by a diverse array of Texas writers including Sandra Cisneros, Katherine Anne Porter, J. Frank Dobie, Juan Seguin, and Molly Ivins. Presentations also addressed poetry of the Borderlands, folk genres such as corridos and cowboy songs, and significant portrayals of the state in television and film. Content was aligned with the secondary English and language arts TEKS.
Workshop faculty included Juan Alonzo and Amy Earhart of Texas A&M University, Patricia M. García (The University of Texas at Austin), Andres Lopez (Northside ISD, San Antonio), and 2020 Texas Poet Laureate Emmy Pérez (The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley).
