Teaching Poetry (Spring 2023 In-Person Workshop)


On April 6, 2023, Humanities Texas held a one-day workshop in Austin for English language arts (ELA) teachers on strategies for teaching poetry at the secondary level.

Curriculum

The workshop provided multiple approaches for generating student interest in and understanding of poetry. Strategies and content aligned with the secondary-level English language arts TEKS.

The workshop featured close interaction with scholars, the examination of primary sources and texts, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities. Teachers received books and other instructional materials.

Faculty

Workshop faculty inlcuded former Texas Poet Laureate Emmy Peréz (The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley), and Evan Carton, Coleman Hutchison, and Roger Reeves of The University of Texas at Austin.

The workshop took place at Thompson Conference Center at the University at the University at Austin. The workshop schedule is available here.
