The other Abraham on our minds this month is our friend, Abraham Verghese, whose magnificent novel, Cutting for Stone (Knopf, 2008), was published yesterday to rave advanced reviews. As poet Naomi Shihab Nye writes: "Prepare to be transported entirely. Cutting for Stone, by the astonishingly gifted Verghese will wrap around you from the very first page and will not let you go."

Abraham Verghese, a former Humanities Texas board member, excels brilliantly in his three simultaneous careers as physician, educator, and writer. He is presently on the faculty of the Stanford University School of Medicine. Cutting for Stone is his first work of fiction, following celebrated non-fiction works The Tennis Partner and My Own Country. Read excerpts of the novel at Verghese's site and at the publisher's site.
