Humanities Texas was deeply saddened by the passing of Julius Glickman earlier this month. A prominent Houston attorney and civic leader, Julius's generosity and leadership transformed Humanities Texas and expanded our capacity to serve communities across the state.
Julius served on the Humanities Texas Board of Directors from 2005 to 2011 and again from 2014 to 2019, including a year as chair from 2009 to 2010. During his tenure, he led the capital campaign to purchase and restore the historic Byrne-Reed House, Humanities Texas's headquarters in downtown Austin. The restoration received national recognition, including eleven architectural awards. He also helped establish a partnership between Humanities Texas and Houston Public Radio that led to the creation of Texas Originals, a radio series now carried on twenty stations statewide.
In recognition of his contributions to the public humanities, Julius received the Humanities Texas Award in 2010 for imaginative leadership at the local, regional, and state levels. In 2018, we established the Julius Glickman Educational Leadership Award as part of the Humanities Texas Outstanding Teaching Awards program.
Julius's vision and dedication shaped Humanities Texas in lasting ways. He will be greatly missed.
