García, Message to President Lyndon B. Johnson Regarding the War on Poverty, 1964.

After the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson was inaugurated as president. During his time in the Oval Office, President Johnson implemented various policies to raise the U.S. standard of living, including legislation known as the War on Poverty. In an April 24, 1964, telegram to President Johnson, Héctor P. García voices the American GI Forum’s support for his programs and the benefit they could have for Mexican American communities.
