On March 6, 2026, Humanities Texas held a one-day workshop in Waco for English language arts (ELA) teachers on strategies for teaching poetry at the secondary level.
Strategies and content aligned with the secondary-level English language arts TEKS. Presentations focused on poetic forms, poetry and place, poetry and voice, and the performance program Poetry Out Loud.
Like all Humanities Texas programs, the workshop featured close interaction with scholars, the examination of texts, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities.
The faculty included Carrie Fountain (Wittliff Collections at Texas State University), Coleman Hutchison (The University of Texas at Austin), Matrex Kilgore (Texas Commission on the Arts), and Ryan Sharp (Baylor University).
The workshop took place at the Armstrong Browning Library at Baylor University. The workshop schedule is available here.
The workshop was made possible with major funding from the State of Texas with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
