Social Security Board poster

President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act on August 14, 1935, creating the Social Security system in the United States. Under this system, the government provides assistance to the elderly as well as to widows and young surviving children of insured workers, as advertised in this poster. Although the act was challenged in the Supreme Court, its constitutionality was upheld in two five-four decisions.
