Education
On April 24, 2025, Humanities Texas held a one-day workshop in Dallas on teaching contemporary popular literature at the secondary level.
Content was aligned with the English language arts (ELA) TEKS. Topics addressed include teaching dystopian literature, graphic novels, and young adult (YA) literature.
The workshop featured close interaction with scholars, the examination of texts, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities. Faculty presentations provided resources and strategies for helping students to become better readers, writers, and critical thinkers. Teachers received books and other instructional materials.
Workshop faculty included Jennifer Buehler (Saint Louis University), Sean P. Connors (University of Arkansas), Jonna Perrillo (The University of Texas at El Paso), and Sarah Ruffing Robbins (Texas Christian University).
The workshop took place on April 24, 2025, at the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum. The schedule is available here.
This workshop is made possible with major funding from the State of Texas with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
