National History Day Webinars with TSHA (Fall 2023 Webinars)

In the fall of 2023, Humanities Texas and the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) will hold two 90-minute webinars to introduce teachers to National History Day and guide teachers in engaging students in historical research using primary sources.

Schedule

The webinars will take place on Zoom from 5:00–6:30 pm on Monday, September 18, and Monday, October 16. Teachers who register will receive information for both webinars. Attendance for both sessions is encouraged but not required.

  • September 18—Teaching Historical Research Using the National History Day Model: This webinar will introduce teachers to the National History Day (NHD) program. NHD is an exciting project-based learning program that motivates students to explore a topic in Texas, U.S., or world history in depth. Students practice research, writing, historical analysis, and critical thinking skills to create their papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries, or websites. Once their project is complete, students may choose to enter a regional contest where winners advance to state and national competitions.
  • October 16—Teaching with Primary Sources and Research Tips: This webinar will help teachers guide and engage their students in research using primary sources. Presenters will share researching tips regarding how to find sources, how to determine if the source is reliable, and methods to analyze various types of sources. There will be a Q&A portion towards the end of the webinar.

Eligibility

The institute is open to social studies teachers in Texas schools.

Attendance and CPE Credit

The online program is free to teachers and their schools. Participants will receive CPE credit and a wealth of curricular materials for each session in the series. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to attend every weekly session. CPE hours will be based on Zoom attendance and adjusted if a participant misses any portion of the program. In order to attend the webinars and receive CPE credit, you must be a registered participant.
