Teaching Civil War Photography with the National Gallery of Art (Spring 2025 Webinar)

On February 10, 2025, Humanities Texas held a webinar facilitated by educators from the National Gallery of Art on teaching Civil War photography and developing visual literacy, historical thinking, and analysis skills.

Curriculum

Content aligned with the TEKS. Educators from the National Gallery of Art introduced a thinking routine to develop students’ abilities to observe, question, find complexity, and make connections, deepening their understanding of the Civil War and its aftermath. Participants explored how to integrate photography and other works of art into their social studies curriculum with research-based strategies that can strengthen student thinking and motivation in the classroom.

Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the webinar emphasized the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities.
