From June 27–29, 2023, in partnership with the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk at The University of Texas at Austin, Humanities Texas will hold an online institute on teaching reading at the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade levels for both social studies and English language arts (ELA) teachers.
The institute will take place online via Zoom each day from 1:00–4:00 p.m. CT. A follow-up session focused on integration and planning will be held on July 6 from 1:00–3:00 p.m. CT.
Teachers who register for the program will be encouraged, but not required, to attend all sessions.
Content will be aligned with the TEKS. Sessions will include interactive presentations on research-based approaches to teaching reading and content-area literacy with an emphasis on social studies texts. Faculty presentations will focus on developing students’ word study, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the institute will be teacher-centered, with an emphasis on developing effective pedagogical strategies.
The program faculty includes Jennifer Schnakenberg (The University of Texas at Austin) and Diane Haager (California State University, Los Angeles).
The online institute is open to social studies and English language arts (ELA) teachers at the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade levels in Texas schools.
The institute is free to teachers and their schools. Participants will receive CPE credit and a wealth of curricular materials. CPE hours will be adjusted if a participant misses any portion of the program.
Complete the online application. Please apply as soon as possible, as registration will occur on a rolling basis. Depending on the number of applicants, Humanities Texas may have to limit attendance for the online program.
The institute is made possible with major funding from the State of Texas with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
