On November 13, 2025, Humanities Texas held a one-day workshop in McAllen for English language arts (ELA) teachers focusing on how Texas writers have engaged the state's history and culture.
Strategies and content aligned with the secondary-level English and language arts TEKS. Presentations focused on fiction, poetry, and young adult (YA) literature, and addressed how to develop students' critical thinking, writing, and communication skills.
Like all Humanities Texas programs, the workshop featured close interaction with scholars, the examination of primary sources and texts, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities.
The faculty included David Bowles and Emmy Pérez of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, John Morán González (The University of Texas at Austin), and Madeleine Gaudin (Writers in the Schools).
The workshop took place at the McAllen Convention Center. The workshop schedule is available here.
The workshop was made possible with major funding from the State of Texas with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
