American Indians in Texas: From the Spanish Era through the Red River War (Spring 2026 In-Person Workshop)

On April 29, 2026, Humanities Texas held a one-day workshop in San Antonio for secondary-level social studies teachers focused on American Indians in Texas from the Spanish Era through the Red River War.

Curriculum

Content aligned with the TEKS. Team-taught by a historian and master teacher, the workshop offered new assessments of the era and provided a collection of curriculum materials geared toward bringing innovative perspectives into the classroom.

Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the workshop was content-based and teacher-centered, with an emphasis on teaching with primary sources and developing effective pedagogical strategies. Participating teachers received a set of curated primary source lessons that are classroom-ready.

Faculty

Program faculty included Andrew Torget (University of North Texas) and Courtney Abubakar (Texas History For Teachers).

Location and Schedule

The workshop took place at the Coates Chapel located on The University of Texas at San Antonio's Southwest campus on April 29, 2026. The workshop schedule is available here.

Sponsors

This workshop was made possible with major funding from the State of Texas, the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, and the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
