On February 27 and 28, 2019, Humanities Texas held one-day workshops in Austin and San Antonio on strategies for teaching and understanding poetry.
The workshops emphasized close interaction with scholars and writers and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities. Strategies and content aligned with the secondary-level English and language arts TEKS.
Workshop faculty included Naomi Shihab Nye (Academy of American Poets), Betty Sue Flowers and Coleman Hutchison of The University of Texas at Austin, Frances Treviño Santos (Travis Early College High School), and Joseph Ortiz and Brian Yothers of The University of Texas at El Paso.
Download the schedules for the Austin workshop and the San Antonio workshop. The Austin workshop took place at the Thompson Conference Center on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin. The San Antonio workshop took place at City Education Partners.
The workshops were made possible with major funding from the State of Texas, with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The San Antonio workshop was also supported by the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation.
