Teaching Shakespeare with The Bard in the Borderlands (Spring 2026 In-Person Workshop)

On April 29, 2026, Humanities Texas held a one-day workshop in San Antonio for English language arts (ELA) teachers on strategies for teaching William Shakespeare’s works and the rich tradition of repurposing his plays to reflect the histories and lived realities of the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands.

Curriculum

Content aligned with the TEKS. In partnership with the Borderlands Shakespeare Colectiva, this workshop featured Shakespeare's works from Borderlands perspectives and drew on the open-access anthology The Bard in the Borderlands: An Anthology of Shakespeare Appropriations en La Frontera.

Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the workshop emphasized close interaction with scholars, the examination of texts, and the development of effective pedagogical strategies and engaging assignments and activities.

Faculty

The workshop was team-taught by the cofounders of the Borderlands Shakespeare Colectiva: Katherine Gillen and Adrianna M. Santos of Texas A&M University–San Antonio and Kathryn Vomero Santos of Trinity University.

Location and Schedule

The workshop took place at Education Service Center Region 20 on April 28, 2026. The workshop schedule is available here.

This workshop was made possible with major funding from the State of Texas, the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, and the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation with ongoing support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
