Teaching Evidence-Based Reading Practices at the Secondary Level (Summer 2026 Webinar Series)

From July 7–9, 2026, in partnership with the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk at The University of Texas at Austin, Humanities Texas will hold a webinar series on teaching reading at the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade levels for both social studies and English language arts (ELA) teachers.

The webinar series will take place online via Zoom each day from 1:00–4:00 p.m. CT.

Teachers who register for the program will be encouraged, but not required, to attend all sessions.

Curriculum

Content will be aligned with the TEKS. Sessions will include interactive presentations on research-based approaches to teaching reading and content-area literacy with an emphasis on social studies texts. Faculty presentations will focus on developing students’ word study, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

Like all Humanities Texas teacher programs, the webinar series will be teacher-centered, with an emphasis on developing effective pedagogical strategies.

Faculty

Diane Haager (education consultant; Cal State LA, retired) and Genise Henry and Jennifer Schnakenberg of The University of Texas at Austin will lead the webinar series.

Eligibility

The webinar series is open to secondary-level humanities teachers in Texas schools.

The online program is free to teachers and their schools. Participants will receive CPE credit and a wealth of curricular materials.
